Nebraska Furniture Mart
Nebraska Furniture Mart is quite fondly called by many as the “largest furniture store in the world”. Originally opened by a Russian immigrant named Rose Blumkin in 1937 in Omaha, what started as a basement business is now a big business with an online shopping feature and three main branches in America – there’s the original Nebraska Furniture Mart in Omaha, the Nebraska Furniture Mart in Kansas, and a Nebraska Furniture Mart in Des Moines, Iowa.
Nebraska Furniture Mart, also referred to by some as simply “Nebraska Furniture” has also expanded its wares from just mere furniture to other home necessities – such as appliances, flooring and, more recently, computers and electronics. From its humble beginnings and simple business philosophy - “Sell cheap and tell the truth” - Nebraska Furniture has proven itself to be one of the biggest business franchises to ever come out of Nebraska.
Rose Blumkin, Mrs. B. to those who knew and loved her, worked at Nebraska furniture until she was a hundred and three, for years after she sold it to Warren Buffett. She died in 1997, about a year after she stopped working.
