Nebraska Cornhuskers
The Nebraska Cornhuskers is essentially a nickname that the Nebraskans embraced as part of who they are. Called “Cornhuskers” because of their affinity with farming, the Nebraskans now use this term colloquially to refer to the youthful things that bring their great state pride – specifically, their college sports stars and athletes. Today, when someone says “Nebraska Cornhuskers” or even just “Huskers” everyone immediately thinks of sports teams that are playing in the inter-collegiate competitions and are associated with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The other thing that comes to mind when “Nebraska Cornhuskers” is uttered is the word “contender”, since the university is part of the big twelve.
There are other nicknames that were once associated with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s teams, but the “Nebraska Cornhuskers” has been almost exclusively favored through most of the twentieth century, eventually making it stick. To date, the Nebraska Cornhuskers hold some of the highest honors in collegiate sports and has in its halls a formidable history of victory.
