Chadron Nebraska
I woke up yesterday morning with a little boy bouncing on my bed. He was holding a dart. I don’t know how Sammy got a hold of that, but let’s just say I was banned from my computer because Sammy got his hands on my scary implement of road trip planning. Still, I had fun because Sammy apparently woke me up to ask me if we could play the game. So we did. It took us thirty minutes before we hit a new city – Chadron, Nebraska. Again, Sammy and I wrote and researched this together.
Chadron Nebraska is the county seat of this state’s Dawes County. It was originally established in 1884 under the name O’Linn (named for its community founder Fanny O’Linn), but the entire community had to pack up and move when the rail road was built six miles away. Eventually, the community was renamed Chadron, after the Bordeaux Creek fur trapper Louis Chartran. This community’s association with Chartran made Chadron Nebraska the premiere place to learn about the history of American fur trade; Chadron’s Museum of Fur Trade is the largest fur trade museum in the United States, and Chadron annually holds the “Fur Trade Days” to commemorate the fact that it had been a fur and trading post in its early days.
My being a history nut makes this place appealing to me. Now to convince Lily to come along…
